THE CREATION OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING ACTIVITY ON COVID-19 WITH THE INCORPORATION OF LESSON STUDY AND 21ST CENTURY LEARNING DIMENSIONS

Abstract


In a globalised world, the need for students to learn skills such as communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills has become more apparent. However, these 21st Century skills are not explicitly taught in schools. A learning activity was created as part of a lesson study that incorporated the 21st Century Learning dimensions. The aim of this lesson study was to design and execute a lesson that reflects a high level of three of the 21 CTL dimensions (Collaboration, Knowledge Construction, and the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for learning), and three of the higher-order thinking levels in Bloom’s Taxonomy (applying, analysing, and creating). There were 25 student participants who were involved from a Year 7 class in one of the secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam. The learning activity was conducted in two lesson cycles that required students to produce a statistical report on COVID-19 as the end product. There were three main components that must be incorporated into the report, namely, the introduction, country profiles, and a bar chart showing the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of the countries. Marks were awarded based on three aspects, which were analysis of data, graphical representation, and the overall written English. The learning activity also integrated three subjects on Mathematics, Geography and English as part of the learning goal. The outcome of the lesson study revealed that the students were able to achieve the learning objective for the learning activity and designed reports on COVID-19 based on the given countries. The learning activity has attained high levels of both 21st Century Learning and Bloom’s Taxonomy.
