THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL SUPPORT ON ANXIETY LEVELS FACING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN COLLEGE STUDENTS IN EAST JAVA

Abstract


This study aims to determine the effect of social support on the level of anxiety when facing the Covid-19 pandemic on students in East Java. The ongoing Covid19 pandemic is affecting the daily life, including the students. Various policies, including social distancing, can affect people’s anxiety level, thus social support is considered to be able to help reduce anxiety levels. Social support can be defined as the presence of attention, appreciation, comfort, or assistance felt by individuals received from other people or groups (Sarafino in Maslihah, 2011). This study uses a quantitative approachwith a survey method. The data collection uses the social support scale that has been used by Faiza (2019) and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS) which has been adapted by Setyowati (2019). The data collection was done online using google forms with 221 respondents. Data analysis used IBM SPSS Statistics 28 For Macintos with simple linear regression analysis. The results of the data analysis in this study showed that there was an influence of social support on the level of anxiety when facing the Covid-19 pandemic on students in East Java with the results of the analysis that the deviation from linearity sig value was 0.807, which is greater than 0.05 which is linear. Value of linear regression coefficients -0.314. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an effect of social support (X) on the level of anxiety (Y).
